In India potato research Institute began at April 1, 1935. At that time there are three seed production stations have they are located at Shimla, Kufri and Bhawali. These stations are come under Imperial Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. During 1945 ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute was established at Patna, Bihar.

In 1956 the headquarters of the Institute was shifted to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.

According to Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database – 2016, India is the second largest producer of potato after China. ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute organized “National Potato Day” at ICAR-CPRI Regional Station, Modipuram, Meerut (UP) in 15th February 2018. The aim of the event is to increase the consumption and popularizing nutritional values of potatoes. In India there are 7 Central Potato Research stations have.
